Good Day for a Good Day

Meet Sara

My story has taken many different turns and involves many different passions. It’s been a crazy chaotic journey, but I’ve relished every moment of it. I love singing, volleyball, community, and learning. By chasing after these all of these passions—despite the criticism and self-doubt I experienced along the way—I have been able to experience and learn so much. I can now say that I am a recording artist, a D1 student-athlete, and on the academic honor roll. But despite any of these achievements, I’m really just Sara. The new college-alum Sara. And like many graduates, I’m facing some big scary questions: What’s next? What career do I pursue? Where do I want to live? What am I really passionate about? It’s hard to discern which path to choose, especially when the future feels so daunting.

In the midst of these fears, which could swamp my mind with constant worry, I have decided to try thinking differently. That’s one of the reasons David Steindl-Rast’s quote above. It reminds me to be grateful for all that I have and to remember there is one choice I get to make every day: I can choose to have an amazing, wonderful day or a stressful, challenging one. It’s perspective. It’s taking each day at a time and choosing to see the good and the opportunity that life presents. Our outlook shapes many of our lived experiences. I do have to acknowledge that I have come from an incredible system of love and support, which I know isn’t the case for everyone. But despite our individual challenges, I hope that we can link arms. How cool would our world be if we could support each other and encourage each other to do what we can to make the best of the hand we’re dealt each day? In a world bogged down by negativity, why not choose optimism, joy, and compassion? Who doesn’t want to have more good days?

We all have that choice, but we don’t all have the tools or the right people to help us wade through it. That’s why Good Day is here—to be your sounding board, your inspiration, and your cheer team. I hope you’ll join us.

Doing What Comes Naturally

An encouragement that I received from my college volleyball coach as helped propel me to continue to choose optimism. He described me as having a “great, contagious, positive energy.” I think that meant more to me than any compliment he could have given me for my skill as an outside hitter.

I had the opportunity to be team captain my senior year at Dartmouth, and with the title came an expectation to lead the team and help them navigate the season highs and lows. But what I have realized is that you don’t need a title to be a leader, especially when you’re part of a team. Each of us can step up, be positive, encourage those around us to stay on course, and avoid negativity and selfish thinking. I like great leaders have the potential to disrupt the status quo and be a creative force for change. I’m looking forward to building on my experience in the future and helping encourage others.

Message Meets Melody

I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, but I started officially in first grade when I joined a local children’s show choir. We wore sequined outfits and danced (which was disastrous for me and my gangly long legs. I am not a skilled dancer to say the least…)

I love music as a way of self-expression and connection; it’s the perfect storytelling platform. I love all different types of music, but I often gravitate towards lyrics that inspire positive and upbeat attitudes about life and relationships. In 2014, I recorded my six-track EP, “It’s a Good Day for a Good Day.” The title track was contagious. I remember after the first session in the studio, the instruments had stopped but the session musicians and even the sound engineers kept humming the tune. I did too. It put the type of uplifting message young women need out into the universe.

That song was the inspiration for GoodDay.com. I initiated this Good Day movement with the hopes of helping young women to be confident, to think and act with purpose, and to spread joy. Without doubt, we women are smart, courageous, creative, and full of potential, and it’s time to share that positivity with the world.

My Purpose: Empowering Girls

You have a unique perspective of what makes it a good day for you. For me, it’s music, sports, my interest in human geography, and helping and learning from others. I’m using the Good Day Ambassador platform to share what I’ve learned by channeling my passions in a way that I hope will inspire others: through my music, through my experience as a D1 student athlete, and through the Good Day community. I’m not a guru, I’m just looking for a way to share what I’ve learned and support others on their journey.

You don’t have to be an athlete or a singer or a college grad to appreciate what it means to work hard, give it your best, sometimes fail, learn from it, and keep reaching for your goals. We all have experiences that have shaped us into the amazing women we are today. We all have good days and bad days, but each morning we’re given the gift of a new day. We get to decide that it’s a good day for a good day.

What makes a good day for you? What challenges are you tackling head on today?
Got any tips to share? Ways you help make it a good day for others?
We’d love to hear from you!
